Every building is composed of main masses that we recognize together as "the building". There are two types of main masses: primary masses and secondary masses. Each view of the house has its own analysis. We generally use the front façade.
Primary Mass
Typically built first
Typically the gable end
Might have the front door
We read the primary masses first
Secondary Mass
Might be an addition
It links the primary masses (if there's more than one)
Similar size as a primary mass
Sub-masses are recognized as part of a main mass. They are smaller elements like dormers and bay windows. Sub-masses can be added to a main mass in order to direct the eye toward something important, such as the front door.
Porches
Towers
Bay Windows
Dormers
Fix gables and dormers that are confusing.
Clarify the building’s entrance.
Add a front porch when possible to draw attention to the entrance and break up a monotonous façade.
