The criteria for success is given to us by the planet. We should build according to nature to avoid environmental degradation and social issues.
We are meant to live in harmony with Nature like the rest of the ecosystem. Humans increase biodiversity in the same way that animals increase biodiversity. Cows and chickens fertilize and aerate the soil for plants because that is in their nature. Humans benefit the ecosystem when we follow our instincts. We tend the soil, we thin overgrown forests, we hunt overpopulated species, etc. What is good for the planet is good for us (in the long-run), and vice versa.
Our instincts tell us what is evolutionarily beneficial. We call it "attractive" because it attracts us. It's a convenient way to know whether something is helpful or harmful. If a lake looks gross, then we should not drink the water or eat the fish. The lack of beauty is a clue that it's bad for our health. A crystal clear lake on a sunny day attracts us because it's good for us. Cows grazing on a pasture as the sun sets attracts us because it's good for the planet.
Growth distributes itself according to what's balanced. Population naturally distributes into cities, towns, and villages. There are a few places with many people, and many places with a few people. Over-consolidated megacities swallow everything up, which disrupts the natural balance. Efficiencies of scale become inefficient at that point, which requires over-industrialization. "Solutions" like factory farming don't attract us, which is a clue that they're not solutions.
