Phoenix, NY is a canal village, 30 minutes north of Syracuse. It has a traditional, walkable fabric that makes it an ideal place for a Workers' College.
The proposed building site is a parking lot on State Street, owned by the village.
The main floor of the college would be open to the public, so the community can see what the college is working on and share ideas.
Main Street has several civic buildings, including the Village Hall, the Masonic Temple, and the Fire Station.
A proposed library at the corner fits with the existing civic buildings, and replaces the existing one that's on the outskirts.
The existing elementary, middle, and high schools are mega-schools that don't fit with the existing civic buildings. Smaller-scaled schools are easy for children to understand. It is less intimidating, which is better for learning.
The buildings should be located within the village center, so children can walk there and participate in civic life. They can have class in the park, or grab a slice of pizza for lunch.
Less busses are needed, and less parents driving everywhere.
The village would benefit from a small grocery store on State Street.
It could have a deli in it.
People could eat outside at the picnic tables under the pavilion overlooking the canal and Henley Park.
A boutique hotel along the canal would add to the village's charm.
It would be an attractive place to stay for boaters and others who visit the community.
Additional infill buildings would help shape State Street.
Parking should be behind the buildings so it doesn't interfere with the pedestrian experience.
