The existing 1-story building along Broadway does not contribute to the street. It is a gap in the pedestrian experience because the rest of the street is 2-3 story buildings.
The proposed Whitehall College Building is a 3-story building, about the same height as the buildings next to it. It has a gable facing the street to match them, and a tower to distinguish that it's more institutional.
The proposed building is located at the corner of Broadway and School Street. It is a convenient walk to Main Street to the north, and to the grocery store to the south.
Train tracks separate Broadway from the Waterfront Park. A railroad crossing at the site would reduce the walk time from 10 minutes to 1 minute.
Whitehall College is modelled after a Workers' University.
It works with local government and the school system to provide useful services that people want to learn how to do.
The college building has 8 classrooms and serves 80 students. The basement has a lounge space, restrooms, and printing services.
There is nearby housing on School Street.
The college should buy three or four of the properties, which can house visiting faculty and guests.
Students can rent a house together, or rent individual apartments located throughout the town.
The College benefits from a mix of things to do around town. Students can visit friends, go to the park, study at the library, grab a quick lunch, and participate in local events.
Infill buildings along Broadway should be places of public accommodation, like stores and restaurants.
The proposed pizza shop (or sandwich shop) is one block down from the college.
